Get Your Sweet Tooth Ready!!!

It's October 18....National Chocolate Cupcake Day!
Hostess has returned to shelves along side Sara Lee, Little Debbie, TastyKakes...
There are cupcake mixes, cupcake pudding flavors, and, there's nothing wrong with simple store-bought.
So take a break and grab a cupcake!!!  :)

If you didn't get enough sweets on October 18, October 19th is the third Saturday of the month...
Sweetest Day.
While originally thought to have to have started to bring candy to those that might not be able to buy it, it has become "Candy Day" for all in the US.

What type of sweets do you like?

Face Your Fears And Celebrate!

Does something really make you afraid?  People?  Speaking?  Animals?
Over 19 million American adults are afraid of something.  Public speaking and death are still the top two fears with spiders and the dark also being in the top.  Today, is the day to take charge.  Make a stand.  Turn off the lights for ten seconds, speak outloud and say "I'm not afraid."
It's Face Your Fears Day!
After doing that, celebrate because it is also National Dessert Day!

Tomorrow, let your Oscar out of the can - the garbage can, that is...
It's National Grouch Day!

Animals and Vodka...Oh My!

October 4th is both World Animal Day and Vodka Day.
Now, don't get those two mixed up.  :)

Have you thought about how many animals are on the endangered list now?  It's a very long list and both scary and sad.  From elephants to coral to frogs, there are many species now listed, and those are just in the A's.  Take a moment today to hug your pet and think about the importance of the animals.

Then, fix you a drink.  How do you take your vodka?  From screwdrivers to dew drivers to vodka tonics.  There is a vodka recipe out there for most people....if you are of age, of course.  You can go with a fruity Pink Musketeer or Sea Breeze or a tangy Lemon Drop.  Bloody Marys and Vodka 7-up are also popular.  Fix your own or go out and order.
Drink up!

What Do You Call Your Car?

It's October!  Can you believe it?!

Today is Name Your Car Day, and this isn't something to be taken lightly.

You want a name that's fun, rolls off the tongue, and something other cars will respect.  You don't want to be talking to your "snookums" at a red light and have a sleek, sports car pull up beside you.  You know that car has a cool name.

Have fun naming your car and take a nice drive to celebrate!

Good Morning!

Are you waking up to that fresh smell of coffee?

Do you hear it percolating?
Do you know what today is?

It's National Coffee Day!

About 85% of us drink coffee, and we normally drink 2-3 cups a day.  With different roasts, beans, and flavors, we like to mix things up.  You can add sweetener, milk, creamers, or even flavored creamers.  You can go out and pay anywhere from $1 to $12 for a cup.  However you take your coffee, enjoy it with a smile and know you are celebrating a holiday today!

September 23 is Going to the Dogs...as Leaders

"If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog."

Harry S. Truman had it right when he made that statement, and today they get celebrated.  September 23 is Dogs in Politics Day.  Hey, those four legged pooches work hard.  They have to stay pampered and polished and try to make their humans look good.  It often seems like an impossible task.

Dogs play an important role in making or breaking their humans image and character.  They've even had speeches named after them.  Like Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Fala Speech" where he stated, "you can criticize me, my wife and my family, but you can't criticize my little dog."

National Respect and National Cheeseburger Day!

Today is a wonderful, amazing, beautiful day!  Yes, it is National Respect Day and National Cheeseburger Day, but the number one thing of the day....

It's my niece's birthday!!!
Have a great one, Summer-Girl!

Now, to National Cheeseburger Day, A 2001 study found that Americans eat on average three burgers a week, and the top three cheese choices are American, Cheddar, and Swiss.  Did you know there is even a Hamburger Hall of Fame?  It is in Seymour, Wisconsin and they consider themselves to be “Home of the Hamburger.”  But lots of people, states, and restaurants want credit for invented the hamburger.  And why wouldn't you???  Americans love their cheeseburgers.  We've even decided to have other products like chips and Hot Pockets flavored cheeseburger.  Whether you double patty, double bun, plain, ketchup, mustard, bacon, tomato, or special sauce it, grab yourself a juicy cheeseburger and bite right in…Respect your burger!

And if you are already looking to tomorrow and football, the 19th is Talk like a Pirate Day.  So grab your plastic swords, eye patches, and stuffed parrot and make your way to Krispy Kreme.

Other Daily Holidays for September 13th

Today is a fun day to celebrate for many reasons.  It's Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day, Blame Someone Else Day, and International Chocolate Day.  Plus, it's National Peanut Day, too!

Did you know that most Americans will eat over six pounds of peanuts and peanut products a year?  We eat enough peanut butter to make 10 billion sandwiches.  That makes peanuts the number one snacking nut in the US.  The National Peanut Board did a study on how people like their peanut butter.  The majority went with creamy but, looking at only men, crunchy won.  The East Coast go for creamy while the West eat more crunchy.

So celebrate big - maybe grab your kids for some fun cooking of chocolate covered peanuts or peanut butter chocolate chip brownies.  Make a mess.  Purposely drop the flour and drip melted chocolate in the microwave.  Hey, just blame the kids!  (Of course, nothing was said about cleaning it up...that will be on you.)  :)

Are You Superstitious?

Do you know what day it is....

It's Friday the 13th!!!

Friday the 13th being bad luck is one of the most common superstitions worldwide.  The number thirteen is shrouded with mystery and darkness.  Some people won't stay in an airplane seat number 13 or a hotel with a 13th floor.  Some buildings won't even use the number 13.  So do you stay inside and throw the covers over your head, or throw caution to the wind and party it up.  Walk under that ladder, cross a black cat's path, and open the umbrella in the house.  It's only a date right???

Relax...it's September 5th and 6th!

Leave the watches at home as you go about your day...Today is Be Late for Something Day!

Take your time.  Sleep in.
Be the slow-poke on the road everyone yells at.
I'm sure your boss will understand!
You don't even need to worry about cooking because it's also National Cheese Pizza Day!
Pizza goes great with football, and football starts tonight!!!

That will lead us right into the first Friday in September which is National Lazy Mom's Day
and Read a Book Day.
Yes, we the next two days are days for you to take time and
enjoy the last of summer.

Did you hear the news...

It's National Dog Day, and your four legged friend wants you to celebrate!  I know my little girl is looking forward to lots of attention and treats.  They are never too big to be a lap dog, and to a dog, it's always treat time somewhere.

It's Getting Hot and Spicy!

Do you like things bursting with spicy flavors?  Something that zings in your mouth?  Well, today is National Hot and Spicy Day.  So throw an extra pepper on your pizza.  Toss some cayenne in your spaghetti sauce.  Or drizzle the Tabasco over your chicken.  Whatever you are having to eat you might want to pep it up and celebrate today.  I made a nice, easy dip with Spicy V8, cream cheese, and lots of seasonings.

Heat things up and take a big bite!

Gimme Some More S'mores!

It's National S'mores Day!

First appearing in 1927 from the Girl Scouts, S'mores keeps on growing in popularity and products.  The word really does come from "some more."   According to a National S'mores Vacation Survey, Americans buy more than 90 million marshmallows each year with 50% going to s'mores, and the Hershey's company produces enough Hershey bars to make 746 million s'mores a year!  That's a lot of "Some More."

There are many ways to enjoy s'mores.  There's s'mores cereal, s'mores poptarts, nutrition bars, cookies, and ice cream.  Eggo even had a limited edition s'mores version of their waffles.  You can change it up with peanut butter and chocolate or marshmallows and banana.  Add jelly, use dark chocolate....the possibilities go on and on.  Me - This morning I am having a S'mores flavored syrup added to my yogurt.  Haven't tried it before but today is the perfect day.

It's Book Lovers Day!

Remember Reading Rainbow....
"Take a Look; It's in a Book."
Today is the day to put that into action.

Open a book and fall into the story.  Find a nice relaxing corner or quiet spot outside and let yourself be taken away.  Whether learning about history, getting swept away in an adventure, or puzzling over the latest mystery, enjoy turning the pages as the story unfolds.

Here a Beer, There a Beer...

August is filled with beer - and something for all ages.

While from 2007 to 2012, International Beer Day was held on August 5th; it was changed to the first Friday of the month after 2012.  So this year you can celebrate twice if you would like.  I'm not sure what your boss will think about Beer Monday on the Fifth but a cold one after work should do the trick.  : )

On the Sixth, all ages can enjoy with a root beer float for National Root Beer Float Day.  A&W's giving away a free small one after 2.

Grab your brewski bottle, your mug of ale, or your root beer float glass and toast the upcoming couple of days!

It's August...A New Month of Holidays

August is a month of new holidays.  Time for - sorry to bring it up - back to school shopping and preparing for fall.  The stores have long sleeves and jackets, and school supplies are on sale.  What is August the month of...:?

National Golf Month, Peach Month, National Catfish Month, and Eye Exam Month all represent August.  You have your pick of how to celebrate.  Deep fry some catfish.  Bite into a juicy peach and let the stickiness drip down your chin.  Practice your golf swing - when you get a hole in 8 just blame it on not getting your Eyes checked yet.  :)

It also brings about preseason football.

Enjoy the start of this great month!

Garfield It's Your Day!

Remember that big orange cat...He loved naps and food and, of course, LASAGNA!  Well, today is the day for him - and many of you - to be happy about....It's National Lasagna Day!

You can even choose to celebrate twice. As Bravo's is offering half off their Lasagna tomorrow.  So, if you love lasagna, today and tomorrow are special treats for you.  So do as Garfield would and dig in! (Silverware is optional.)

WooHoo! It's National Tequila Day!

It's a day to celebrate.  Do you like shots, margaritas, a different cocktail?  All delicious and to be enjoyed on this day.  Tequila connoisseurs and amateurs alike will enjoy themselves today.  There are many brands, varieties, and types of tequila - pace yourself - don't try them all but savor whichever you choose.

Ready for some fun facts:
Connoisseurs consider it to be true "tequila" only if it is 100% agave.  Otherwise, it is said to be a mixto.  There are more than 136 species of agave, and you really are looking for 100% blue agave.

The Mexican government does hold the rights to the name "tequila."

Ever gone tequila shopping and wondered what a blanco was or why an anejo costs more?  Well, it has to do with the ageing.
Blanco is the silver tequila and isn't aged in wood.
Reposado is aged for a time period between 2 and 11 months.
Anejo is aged in oak barrels for over a year.

Salt.  Shot.  Lemon/Lime.  Does that mean something to you?  Yes, it's the way to do a tequila shot.  Originally, they were taken with sugar and orange wedges.

Tequilas, like many spirits, have a wide range of prices.  The most expensive are thought to be the Hacienda La Capilla with its diamond-encrusted bottle and the Ultra Premium tequila Ley .925 Pasion Azteca.  They both have bottles with asking prices in the millions.

Tequila is on the rise in the U.S.  In 2012, it had 8% of total spirit sales in bars and restaurants, and the margarita is said to be the favorite cocktail.

There's even a drink called a Tequila Sunrise, and it's very pretty.  Maybe it's what your having this morning with your breakfast....if you have the day off, of course.  :)

Tomorrow is National Hot Dog Day! Get ready....

Yes, July 23 2013 is the day for a hot dog.  Grilled, boiled, baked, cold, with relish or mustard or ketchup...However you take your dog today's the day to enjoy them.

Some fast hot dog facts:

  • Their roots can be traced back to Germany.
  • Popularity in the US grew when the first Coney Island hot dog stand opened in 1871.
  • It is thought that the term "hot dog" was coined by a cartoonist who thought they looked like "red hot dachshund dogs."  He couldn't spell dachshund so he just wrote "hot dogs."
  • Yes, there is a government definition of hot dogs, and it is even stated that they can't be more than 10% water or 30% fat.
  • Last year, U.S. grocery stores sold more than $1.7 billion in hot dogs.
  • Throughout the U.S., there are many varieties.  From New York to Chicago to Seattle, everyone has their own way to eat a hot dog.  There is even a Kansas City dog.
  • While extremely popular at baseball games (it's believed that the 2013 baseball season will sell 26 million hot dogs), you really can find hot dogs most everywhere - even the Vatican and White House. Hey, even Mickey Mouse wanted a hot dog.  His first words were "Hot dogs!"

I Scream...You Scream....

It's National Ice Cream Day!!!

July is Ice Cream month, but today is the official ice cream day.  What flavor do you like?  Cone?  Cup?  Sundae?  Fudge bar?  Malt?  So many delicious ways to enjoy this cool treat.  Last year, the International Ice Cream Association did a survey on favorite flavors.  While vanilla ranked number one by a landslide, cookies and cream and mint chocolate chip were right up there.  Yes, the most popular may be the simple and original flavors, but people are branching out.  We have pickle, garlic, and jalapeno not to mention bacon pieces for topping.  Baskin Robbins has even put together a study on what your favorite flavor says about you.

However you take it...enjoy a big scoop today....or maybe two...or three!

Today - Another Fourth???

July Fourth is the date the final draft of the Declaration of Independence was approved, but it wasn't the day it was written or the day John Adams thought would be celebrated. He actually wrote to his wife saying the second would be "the great anniversary Festival."

Our Independence and freedoms are so important why don't we celebrate both days. Smile today at fellow Americans, wave to children playing in the sun, and send a prayer of thanks and peace to God for our soldiers and ancestors. There are many reasons to celebrate - and hey, there's always a reason for more home made ice cream, strawberry shortcake, apple pie, or whatever dish you want! :)

Happy Second of July!

June 25th - The Day for Parents and Catfish

It's National Catfish Day!
Ronald Reagan saw the value in the farm-raised catfish and set aside a day to celebrate it.  Do you love catfish? Bake, grilled, or fried...it's all good.  Go fishing or - follow my way - and just go to a restaurant and order catfish.  :)

Also, it's summer and the kids are home, wanting to be entertained.  The phrase "I'm bored" is heard often.  Do you need a day for you?  Have you ever wished someone else would take your children to work?  Today is the day for it.  It's "Please Take My Children to Work Day."  If nothing else just the title makes you want to smile and think of the possibilities.

Weekend of Family Fun and Forgiving

Grab your hot dogs, marshmallows, chocolate bars, and sleeping bags.  It's time to head to the backyard for the Great American Backyard Campout.  Yes, the fourth Saturday of June is all about sleeping under the stars and backyard foods.  Tell stories around the camp fire - or flashlight.  Sing songs and make sure to do my nephew's favorite part...S'mores!

Tomorrow, is a day to reflect and forgive.  It's National Let it Go Day!  A good day for us all to release any pent up anger or sadness.  Take a deep breath and think of good times.  Try to smile, hug a loved one, or talk to a friend on the phone.  Put the past behind you and look forward to the beautiful summer ahead.  :)

Tuesday...A Great Day for a Picnic!

It's International Picnic Day!  Grab a basket, bag, cooler...and head out.  Whether a big gathering with friends and neighbors at the park or a simple snack out back with your family, spring and summer are great times for picnics.

Originally thought to have started as social gatherings and banquets during medieval times, picnics are still loved today.  People pack things for sandwiches or do cookouts of hamburgers and hot dogs.  Arrays of salads, chips, and fruit are often found at picnics.  Whatever you wish to eat, smile and think about having a picnic.

Mom Always Said Eat Your Vegetables

June 17th is Eat Your Vegetables Day.  Gardens are flourishing with fresh vegetables so I hope you hit the Farmer's Market this weekend.  There any beautiful and delicious vegetables to choose from.  You could start the day with an omelette filled with peppers, mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes...  Do you like salads with lots of greens, tomatoes, and cucumbers?  Maybe you want steamed broccoli and cauliflower with some cheese and garlic?  Or what about a nice veggie pizza or wrap for lunch?  Surveys have shown that the top liked vegetables are potatoes, corn, and broccoli with turnips and Brussels sprouts to be the least favorites.  Whichever vegetables you like or however you choose to eat them, make your mom - and doctor - proud and eat up!

Happy Father's Day!!!

Happy Father's Day to all!

Did you know that the idea for Father's Day actually originated on Mother's Day when a lady wanted to honor the father that raised her on his own.  What a great tribute and tradition!  Dads are amazing people and need to be cherished and told they are loved.  My father is amazing, and, of course, the best!  :)

Today is a day for family, friends, fun, food...Enjoy it all!

Are You a Mess in the Kitchen?

Tuesday, June 11, 2013

Food Days this Week...Yum!

While the week may have started with office supplies, it will continue with food days.  Get your sweet tooth ready.  Today is National German Chocolate Cake Day.  Perfect for close to Father's Day at my house - my father loves a good German Chocolate cake.  A piece to you, Dad!  And my mother isn't forgotten either...tomorrow, June 12th, is Peanut Butter Cookie Day!  Enjoy!

It's Ballpoint Pen Day!

Ballpoint pens - do you buy them by the dozen or keep a precious hold on the ones you have...  We all use them, and, according to an office theft survey PaperMate did 100% of responders say they've stolen one at one time.  People are always walking off with pens.  It's habit, by accident, or maybe because they just liked the color or way it wrote.  Whatever the reason, pens are 2X as likely to go missing as any other supply.  So, on this Monday morning, as you go into the office keep a close eye on your pen.
