It's a day to celebrate. Do you like shots, margaritas, a different cocktail? All delicious and to be enjoyed on this day. Tequila connoisseurs and amateurs alike will enjoy themselves today. There are many brands, varieties, and types of tequila - pace yourself - don't try them all but savor whichever you choose.
Ready for some fun facts:
Connoisseurs consider it to be true "tequila" only if it is 100% agave. Otherwise, it is said to be a mixto. There are more than 136 species of agave, and you really are looking for 100% blue agave.
The Mexican government does hold the rights to the name "tequila."
Ever gone tequila shopping and wondered what a blanco was or why an anejo costs more? Well, it has to do with the ageing.
Blanco is the silver tequila and isn't aged in wood.
Reposado is aged for a time period between 2 and 11 months.
Anejo is aged in oak barrels for over a year.
Salt. Shot. Lemon/Lime. Does that mean something to you? Yes, it's the way to do a tequila shot. Originally, they were taken with sugar and orange wedges.
Tequilas, like many spirits, have a wide range of prices. The most expensive are thought to be the Hacienda La Capilla with its diamond-encrusted bottle and the Ultra Premium tequila Ley .925 Pasion Azteca. They both have bottles with asking prices in the millions.
Tequila is on the rise in the U.S. In 2012, it had 8% of total spirit sales in bars and restaurants, and the margarita is said to be the favorite cocktail.
There's even a drink called a Tequila Sunrise, and it's very pretty. Maybe it's what your having this morning with your breakfast....if you have the day off, of course. :)
